  1. In 1946, in Barcelona, "A Star Was Born!"

One thing is to go to a concert in order to listen to lovely songs from well known films. Another is that you do that by the hand of Josep Carreras. He has all the necessary "plus" to make of this artistic program much more than just an ensemble of lovely pieces. To start with, I would say you can somehow feel the hand of his artistic direction, from the beginning to the end. The program is very well chosen and should you go deep on his character, you can feel not only the beauty of each piece but the added value of the line-up as an ensemble, with space to, I suppose, some personal favorites of the singers, something that does not take nor coherence nor beauty to the all, much on the contrary. Did he made sugestions about the arrangements? They are beautiful. And the intensity they achieve in the medley, toped by an outstanding "New York, New York" is really magnificent. F

From the beginning to the end, yesterday night, in his Auditory, singing for his Foundation, Josep Carreras starred and inspired his two young colleagues to moments of remarkable level. His sound adapts so well to this type of music! His recordings speak volumes about this and the truth is that the velvet and deeply sensual sound again had a tremendous impact, giving us powerful and amazing sensitive renditions. Perhaps his, lets say "even more" greatest moment was his rendition of "The impossible dream." He performed it with such vitality and ardour, with such phrasing, with such sound, with such temperament, that he completely set the house on fire. The endless ovation that followed made him to come back to the stage and take another bow since no one let him go without that. Endless applause and shouts of "Bravo" had already began with "Some Enchanted Evening", performed in delightful joyful tone. His duet with Pilar Jurado, "All I ask of you", represented another high point of the evening. And simply no words for the "The Godfather" moment. His "Parla più piano" - sang in a convincing duet with Sergi Gimenez -, moved me deeply. As did "Manhã de Carnaval", his final solo piece during the official program. The medley section represented a powerful "finale", vibrant moments alternating with sensitive ones, the three singers giving their all, with Josep Carreras again putting that final "plus" that simply aroused, and counting with the permanent inputs of his colleagues.

The concert began with images of Josep Carreras during his childhood. Pictures taken on the occasion of his well known debut at the Liceu, when he was eleven years old; pictures taken during that radio program where he performed his "La dona è mobile"; pictures with his first singing teacher, Magda Pruneda; pictures of him simply playing. Some of all these were completely unknown to me. It was very nice to look at all of them under the registered voice of Josep - so smooth - teling about him, about his first years and about the inspiration he took from the film "The great Caruso". And I am always very impressed by the fact that on his gestures as an adult you immediately recognize his gestures as a child. Particularly, when he is singing. It is marvellous, absolutely amazing and, in my opinion, something that speaks volumes about the intuition for singing and about that gift he had inside him from the moment he was born. In more general terms, it also as something to do, I suppose, about that marvellous authenticity and spontaneity of his character. It was a meaningful start for the concrete artistic project we were about to be introduced to, a very well chosen prelude that gave the evening the appropriate - and lovely - initial light. And throughout the concert, while listening to the artists, you could see on the screen impressive images of the same movies the song belonged to.

  2. The final section, the encores, came with the Josep Carreras Auditory experiencing a vibrant and triumphant ambiance. His was the third and final encore, a Cuor' ngratto, with his deluxe signature. And he received a more than well deserved deluxe standing ovation.

As in every program, time will bring those small corrections or little changes that come to light only when such program is performed in public for the first time. And I do wish this project who premiered last night a long and successeful live.

My final remark for this "Belcanto al Cine", by Josep Carreras, comes from another movies. Because, yesterday night Josep Carreras made us again understand why 62 years, 9 months and 10 days ago, in Barcelona, "A Star Was Born". A Star, as an Artist! A Star as an Human Being! This was his first connection with the art of cinema, I believe!! A connection by the hand of God!

  6. No que no me molesta: sólo no estaba acostumbrada a tus comentarios en inglés.

I regret that people coming from other countries could not always understand neither the main points of the discussion, but the fact is that even if I'm currently studying english, still I can't guarantee posts correctly and perfectly written in english.

Hope that the section dedicated to the breaking news could be easily comprehensible to them, as I try to run it in english!

  8. Sergi Giménez has uploaded several clips of this concert on his youtube channel. I don't want to spam, therefore I am only posting here the ones with JC involved.

  11. Really, thanks to you, Claudia! I didn't remember to check Sergi Giménez' channel in youtube. You'v been very very useful. Do you mind if I make a post about these videos in the next days?
They're very very special! The fact is that such a programme was so particular, that it deserves a "special treatment".

Thanks for your nice words and keep following this blog! I'd be very pleased if you did!

Una abraçada també per a tu!

  12. I knew these videos since last year and do think it is a very good idea if you make an entry, Luvi. Besides what we all know about Josep Carreras, Sergi Gimenez is a young tenor who absolutely deserves all our support!!

  13. I definitely agree with both of you, Maria and Luvi. And apart from what you have said, they're almost impossible to find unless you know where to search and go directly through Sergi's channel. It's a shame that they have been online for quite a while and such few people have seen them. They're so special and really deserve more attention, don't they?
