There is something in life, in my life, that was able to overcome this extraordinary passion I have for singing, and especially lyrical singing. Whenever the Foundation succeed in finding a compatible donor for patients awaiting a transplant, or every time we make progress in scientific research thanks to one of our scholarships, or when leukaemia patients are treated in transplant units or clinics that we have helped to finance, I feel enormously happy. Thanks to my profession, I am privileged to help or, at least, try to help people in need. In 1987, I became ill with leukaemia. During my illness I was lucky enough to have a family who supported me throughout, to have an extraordinary medical team, in addition to the spontaneous support and sympathy of the general public. This allowed me to maintain my morale and it gave me the necessary energy and determination to fight leukaemia. On July 14th 1988, with the support of my family, eminent scientists and business people, I had the opportunity to create the International Foundation for the Fight Against Leukaemia. Our Foundation focuses on four main areas: supporting scientific research, providing infrastructures for healthcare centres and hospitals, and searching for bone marrow and stem cell donors. All this in addition to offering social services for leukaemia patients and their families. The main mission of the Foundation is to support scientific research. The Josep Carreras Foundation for the Fight Against Leukaemia was born to help make Leukaemia a completely curable disease for everyone and in all cases. Our work will not stop until our goal becomes a reality.

16th José Carreras Gala: more than 6.600.000 €, even more than last year

Si avvicina il Natale, e uno dei tanti motivi che ci suggerisce l'imminenza di questa grande festa è l'appuntamento con il José Carreras Gala a Leipzig, uno degli eventi benefici più importanti in Germania. A Natale si è tutti più buoni, e in merito a generosità, la Germania si dimostra sempre impeccabile.

La delusione per non aver potuto assistere al Gala live streaming online, come si pensava fosse possibile (era possibile solo per la Germania), è stata ben presto sostituita da una grande gioia per il generosissimo risultato conseguito: più di 6.600.000,00 €, per l'esattezza 6.678.674 € sono stati raccolti quest'anno, circa 100.000 € in più rispetto alla scorsa edizione. "Danke Deutschland, vielen Dank!!" sono le parole che ha pronunciato Josep Carreras, una volta consapevole della cifra raggiunta. Con questa, e con i 120.000 € del pubblico che ha assistito al Gala ieri sera alla Messehalle 1 a Leipzig, - ha detto Carreras - si è ancora più vicini all'obiettivo che si è proposto la Fondazione che porta il suo nome, ovvero che la leucemia sia curabile per tutti ed in ogni caso.

Insieme al presentatore, Axel Bulthaupt, Carreras ha presentato diversi pazienti che hanno beneficiato dei progetti finanziati dalla José Carreras Leukämie Stiftung, mostrati da filmati, e da cui hanno tratto conforto e speranza nella guarigione. Tra questi la trentunenne Susan, che ha avuto modo di incontrare il suo donatore di cellule staminali, che non solo le ha salvato la vita, ma che ha permesso anche la nascita di suo figlio, e il piccolo Robin di 9 anni, che quest'anno ha potuto assistere al Gala assieme ai suoi genitori, contrariamente dall'anno scorso che hli era stato impossibile per problemi di salute, e che nel tornare a casa avrebbe appreso un'altra sorpresa, un viaggio a New York.
