There is something in life, in my life, that was able to overcome this extraordinary passion I have for singing, and especially lyrical singing. Whenever the Foundation succeed in finding a compatible donor for patients awaiting a transplant, or every time we make progress in scientific research thanks to one of our scholarships, or when leukaemia patients are treated in transplant units or clinics that we have helped to finance, I feel enormously happy. Thanks to my profession, I am privileged to help or, at least, try to help people in need. In 1987, I became ill with leukaemia. During my illness I was lucky enough to have a family who supported me throughout, to have an extraordinary medical team, in addition to the spontaneous support and sympathy of the general public. This allowed me to maintain my morale and it gave me the necessary energy and determination to fight leukaemia. On July 14th 1988, with the support of my family, eminent scientists and business people, I had the opportunity to create the International Foundation for the Fight Against Leukaemia. Our Foundation focuses on four main areas: supporting scientific research, providing infrastructures for healthcare centres and hospitals, and searching for bone marrow and stem cell donors. All this in addition to offering social services for leukaemia patients and their families. The main mission of the Foundation is to support scientific research. The Josep Carreras Foundation for the Fight Against Leukaemia was born to help make Leukaemia a completely curable disease for everyone and in all cases. Our work will not stop until our goal becomes a reality.

Josep Carreras to attend the opening ceremony of a new Leukemia Research Laboratory Center in Leipzig on 14 December

Il 14 Dicembre, Josep Carreras assisterà alla cerimonia di apertura del nuovo laboratorio di ricerca che la Casa di Ematologia e Oncologia, che porta il suo nome, del Dipartimento di Medicina dell'Università di Lipsia ha ricevuto in donazione. Le donazioni hanno raggiunto 1.77 milioni di € e sono stati investiti in laboratori speciali finalizzate al miglioramento delle terapie per la cura della leucemia. Poco più di un mese fa, il tenore aveva assistito all'inaugurazione di un'altra Unità presso l'Ospedale Universitario Eppendorf di Amburgo (UKE).

Al Johannisallee di Lipsia la malattia è stata sempre motivo di grande attenzione, e per anni ha affiancato le cure mediche con i moderni sistemi di diagnostica, reparti sterili per i donatori di cellule staminali con camere speciali, e naturalmente con l'aiuto di un team di medici e infermieri.

Il piano appena allestito per il José Carreras Research Laboratory Center, che è esclusivamente dedicato alla ricerca, sarà, d'ora in poi, un altro aspetto importante della lotta contro la leucemia. Con le opzioni disponibili di attrezzature s'avanguardia e di un laboratorio altamente sterile, l'equipe medica potrà esplorare i misteri delle cellule leucemiche e rivelarne le loro debolezze. L'obiettivo è lo sviluppo di nuovi metodi di diagnosi e la ricerca di migliori terapie per i pazienti.

La Cerimonia solenne, presso cui si invitano i rappresentanti dei media, inizierà alle ore 16:00 presso Max Bürger Research Center Johannisallee 30 (House J) 04103 Leipzig; alle ore 16:30 invece è prevista una conferenza stampa e la visita al nuovo laboratorio di ricerca "José Carreras": oltre alla presenza del Presidente della José Carreras Leukämie Stiftung, ci saranno anche il Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Dietger Niederwieser, Capo del Dipartimento di Ematologia e Oncologia, Università di Lipsia e il principe Alessandro di Sassonia, Presidente di "Insieme contro il cancro eV".
