Josep Carreras with Anna Netrebko and Erwin Schrott together in Geneva for a memorable benefit concert promoted by Chopard

Key facts:

◦ Josep Carreras, Anna Netrebko and Erwin Schrott. Last Sunday, the Swiss luxury Watch and Jewelry prestigious marker Chopard put these three great artists together on stage at the Victoria Hall in Geneva, to support their respective Foundations: The  Josep Carreras Leukemia Foundation, and Anna and Erwin for kids, a non profit organization that provides medical care to children. Chopard will entirely donate them the proceeds of the evening. Let me remind you that the Carreras Foundation, with which the family Scheufele of Chopard has collaborated since the creation of the entity, also has a branch in Switzerland whose Chairman is Karl Scheufele. Together with such formidable trio, Maestro David Giménez and the Gstaad Festival Orchestra.
A just amazing event that could be accessed by a group of Chopard customers as well as some fans of these three Opera stars: after the first day, tickets, the few ones available, were sold out. The program was extremely varied, of course dealing with opera arias, but also with tango, zarzuela, operetta, musicals and some popular songs.
◦ The orchestra opened the wonderful charity event with the Guglielmo Tell Overture by Gioacchino Rossini. The first star who came on stage was Josep Carreras, warmly welcomed, to begin with Rosó (Pel teu amor): an perfect opening in his mothertongue. After him, Anna Netrebko made her entrance: the great diva, who recently made her debut at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona with Iolanta, offered the aria, "I am the humble servant" from Adriana Leceuvreur. No less ovationed was  Erwin Schrott, talented bass-baritone, husband of Netrebko with whom he has a beautiful son, Tiago. The Uruguayan made original choices, beginning with the Sorozabal's zarzuela, The Tabernera del Puerto, from which has interpreted a fragment entitled Despierta Negro. More opera with the lady of the evening, with a wonderful version of Musetta aria, Quando me'n vo, from La Bohème by Giacomo Puccini, and then again Schrott with a magnificent tango, Los pájaros perdidos by Astor Piazzolla. After that, David Giménez conducted the orchestra alone, the Gstaad Festival Orchestra, performing the intermezzo from Puccini's Manon Lescaut, and then let the scene to Josep Carreras, whose return was eagerly awaited by the audience. He delighted them with his wonderful interpretation of Il Lamento di Federico, an aria that has accompanied him since the beginning of his glorious career: the tenor has, once again, able to combine power and sweetness with great skill, once again setting the stardard of this wonderful piece from L'Arlesiana by Cilea. A duo between Anna Netrebko and Erwin Schrott with Bess you is my woman, from the opera Porgy and Bess by the American composer George Gershwin,  ended with the first affectionate kiss scambiatosi from what is a wonderful couple also in life, was to close the first part.
◦ The restarting was assigned to Netrebko who paied tribute to Verdi singing for the first time Lady Macbeth's aria.
The third moment of our great tenor arrived with another song that greatly enhances its interpretive skills: Ya mis horas felices from the zarzuela La del soto del parral, with that bitter and melancholyc nature Carreras'voice always expresses with a disarming sincerity.
Erwin Schrott wanted to continue in the wake of tango with one more piece by Astor Piazzolla, Oblivion, preceeded by Nostalgias, signed by Juan Carlos Cobián. Before this latest mentioned, David Giménez performed with the orchestra the beautiful intermezzo from La Boda de Luis Alsonso by Jerónimo Jiménez.
The second duet between Netrebko and Schrott, an inevitable Lippen Schweigen from operetta Die Merry Widow by Franz Lehar, turned out to be absolutely delicious: once they pronounced the words "Du hast mich lieb" came that second loving kiss. Before the aforementioned Oblivion by Erwin, Anna chose Song to the Moon from Rusalka by Dvorak, then Josep Carreras was back, and they sang in duet Tonight from West Side Story. In this case, we can't speak of "couple in life", but no doubt that the combination of one of the greatest and most beloved tenors of all time and the best soprano of the current generation of opera singers, can not but be hugely successful. It was Josep Carreras who officially closed this memorable concert with his touching version of Core 'ngrato, which moved the audience who responded with a long and thunderous ovation.
◦ This trio of excellence offered five more songs to an audience well aware that they were attending  an absolutely extraordinary event: among these, fragment from the operetta Die Csárdásfürstin by  Hungarian composer Emmerich Kalman, entitled Heia in den Bergen. I remember perfectly that I had already written this title here few months ago. Furtherly, I can mention a very special duet between Josep Carreras and Erwin Schrott on one of the best songs by Carlos Gardel, El día que me quieras: once they were back on stage, Schrott has publicly expressed his great esteem towards the tenor, saying that his heart was strongly beating for singing along with him. "Me bate fuerte el corazón al cantare con usted, Maestro!", these were his exact words. After such lovely performance, they called Anna Netrebko back on stage to perform the traditional Brindisi from La Traviata to honour the great composer, Giuseppe Verdi, on occasion of the bicentenary of the birth. The three of them were rewarded with incredible ovations, also addressed to David Giménez and Gstaad Festival Orchestra, to whom Josep Carreras as well as Netrebko and Schrott showed generous gratitude.
◦ Such unique concert was finished: an event that was the culmination of a weekend dealing also with the re-opening of the Chopard Boutique in Geneva, due to renovation, and of course with the concert rehearsals:  Erwin Schrott shared live through Facebook and Twitter some pics of the rehearsals. Thanks Erwin!

  1. You're right it was a great concert, but Netrebko never sang La donna e mobile (how could she ?)!! What about Lady Macbeth aria at the beginning of the second part, which she sang for the first time, for the year of Verdi ? And Csardasfurstin was a encore.
Schrott sand Los pajaros perdidos in the first part and nostalgia in the second.
    Best regards.
