Torniamo a noi.

Buona settimana a tutti!!

Key facts:

Welcome to a new Video of the Week.
Actually I had a different plan for today: I should have had to satisfy a very special request, but some organizational issues obliged me to postpone and change the topic of this post. I hope my first proposal to be made reality as soon as possible, with the same enthusiasm with which I accepted this request.
Let's go on now. Alternatively, as I haven't found any special anniversary, I tried to bring here a kind of proposal that I have realised it has been missing for quite a long time: a Spanish song. In this case, of course ignoring those pieces I have already proposed, you have so many possibilities of choice. I had no trouble because recently I had listened over and over again, with so much pleasure, one in particular, composed by Fernando Obradors.
Being part of the collection of Spanish classical songs called Canciones clásicas españolas, no.4, Del cabello más sutil is a song for voice and piano which belongs to the modern age: we assume that the composer, born in Barcelona at the very end of the 19th Century, wrote it in the period from 1920 to the early 40's.
Obradors, in addition to the famous cycle of Spanish classical songs which this fragment belongs to,  stood out for his lyrical compositions for theatre, as well as in the  symphonic field and, to a lesser extent, in the zarzuela.
As I am very fond of the recital repertoire, I could not miss to propose sooner or later one of the most representative pieces that have always had a special place in the programs of Josep Carreras' recitals ever, from the early seventies until today: many of you like me will surely remember his recent rendition of it, part of his recital at the Salzburg Festival last year, but in any case there are several examples of the highest value, many of which are part of recitals filmed and released on DVD. Among these, which you must be familiar to, I chose the version of his recital in Moscow together with Montserrat Caballé and pianist Miguel Zanetti,  held at the Bolshoi Theatre on 5 September, 1989.
On that occasion, the position of the song was particularly meaningful as it marked the so-called grand finale of the recital, which was not with a duet as we would have spontaneously imagined, but  with a song each, and Carreras chose just that one. Although its short duration, it is a musical piece that, if interpreted correctly and with good taste, is able to provide with considerable flow of emotions. Just a few verses of extraordinary evocative power that reaches the peak in the images of the thinnest hair of her braid used like a chain as to bring his beloved girl by his side, or that of the jug he would like to be just kiss her lips each time she drinks from it.
Here, Josep Carreras gives us two minutes really outstanding, beginning with the very first vers sung as a whole with just a single breath, a detail that immediately strikes the eye: his kind of reading is absolutely correct: he strategically shows off his lovely pianissimo to emphasise the intimacy of the image in the verse para besarte en la boca, progressively gaining strength again from besarte, and repeated again in the finale. The slow pace is ideal to let his exquisite phrasing shine: despite  he maintains a sweet, tender approach,  he does not give up refined variations and passages of good taste, thus ensuring an overall result of extraordinary depth. Enjoy it!
I hope you have appreciated my proposal of today. See you next Sunday with a new video. Have a nice week!!
