"Il Video della Settimana": Ten years since the 30 Years Gala at the Vienna State Opera

Buona settimana a tutti!!

Key facts:

Welcome to a new Video of the Week .
As some of you surely remember , the date of 27 February includes a double celebration. The first concerns Josep Carreras' comeback to Barcelona, recovered from the disease that forced him far away in Seattle for several months. Last year was the twenty-fifth anniversary, and on this occasion I wrote this post.
As regards the other event, this year is the tenth anniversary of the Gala for the 30th years of Josep Carreras at the Vienna State Opera, an opera house that is often celebrated in this blog, like it was particularly last year, on the occasion of the extraordinary concert for the twenty-five years after the legendary comeback recital of 1988.
The celebration of Carreras' thirty years at the Staatsoper acquired a national dimension, as shown by the initiative of the Austrian Post Office, which issued a commemorative stamp a few days earlier, on 23 February. In the first edition of the stamp, for the first time dedicated to the singer and then a source of great pride for our tenor, 750,000 copies were issued. 10% of sales were donated to the José Carreras Leukaemia Foundation.
The Gala, a benefit gala as well of course, consisted of three parts, for a crescendo such powerful emotions that have melted the frost temperatures of that night of late February: firstly, a recital of songs and arias by Leoncavallo, Puccini and Tosti, along with his lifetime pianist, Lorenzo Bavaj; at the end of this first part, Carreras received a check of  two hundred thousand euro for his foundation, as a result of the gala and sponsors as well.
Secondly, the third act of Sly, the final agony of his character, along with Isabelle Kabatu and Boaz Daniel, conducted by David Giménez; finally, the fourth act of Carmen with inseparable Agnes Baltsa, for a really explosive finale. ORF, the Austrian Television, often broadcasts documentaries about Josep Carreras which include some fragments of this event, and it is a shame that these are not available on You Tube.
At the end of the gala, the former director of the Opera, Ioan Holender, gave him a book as a gift, a collection of the programs each of his performances there.
Carreras has shown his gratitude to the public of a completely sold out opera house, for giving him the opportunity to experience some of the most glorious pages of his career: immediatly after, he said in an interview that, thanks to that same passionate audience, he had seen before his eyes the film of his great nights in Vienna.
As is well known, the thirtieth anniversary referred to his debut as the Duke in Rigoletto, which occurred on 28 January, 1974 . Since then, an uninterrupted love story has begun, providing some of the best moments of the last century opera. If now it's 10 years since that gala, 2014 marks Josep Carreras' 40 years at the Vienna State Opera, with 22 operatic roles and more than 130 performances.
As I said, and as many of you know, inevitably I have to write of his performances in Vienna very often, but to be honest I do not feel up to writing in one post of such superlatives forty years, because even the richest sequence of laudatory adjectives can not describe such a reality: simply, it would be never enough..
So, I thought to put down my virtual pen, and let facts speak for me: I have prepared a video that includes some unforgettable moments. I wish I could include everything, but I was forced adapt to the material available: the rest is part of the treasure of either the television archives or the Staatsoper itself. Say no more, I leave you with the video, hope you like it! The opening theme is the Tchaikovsky's Concert for Piano and Orchestra no.1 in B flat minor, played by pianist Evgeny Kissin and the Berliner Philarmoniker conducted by Herbert von Karajan. Enjoy!!
Hope you have appreciated my proposal of today. See you next Sunday with a new video. Have a nice week!!
