Waiting for El Juez: the plot, brief video interviews, and a short excerpt of a duet

ENGLISH
The world premiere of El Juez is closer and closer: less than a week to go, and on Tuesday a press conference is planned to present the new work by Christian Kolonovits. Rehearsals with costumes and make up even on Easter Sunday, but I am convinced that any sacrifice will be amply rewarded with three successful performances.
A few days ago, the preview of Breaking News announced the new website the Teatro Arriaga has entirely dedicated to El Juez, where you can find all the photos, some videos, interviews and news related to it. In the news list there is also some posts pof this blog and, I admit, it is a big satisfaction.
I take this opportunity once again to thank the staff of the Teatro Arriaga, Clásica y tuits for the beautiful pictures, and the singers sharing things on social networks, real surprises.
Even after 20 days of rehearsals, many of them still can not get used to the extraordinary presence of Josep Carreras. Mezzosoprano Ana Ibarra explains it very well in this video: she was convinced that, within two days, she would be used to it, but just the thought of singing with him, still makes her blush. "He is a wonderful colleague - she said - he makes you feel as if he were any collegue, but he is not.  He is a genius, and it is a pleasure to work with him." She tells us also something about her character, the abbess, the one who organizes the plot, that steals babies.
In the previous post you have found more details on the leading role, Judge Federico, played by Josep Carreras, and those two arias that will surely thrill his audience. In this video, the composer of El Juez, Christian Kolonovits, says something more, bringing the title of one of these arias, Tras los ojos llora el alma, Federico's main one, and probably the strong point of the whole opera together with Alma valiente. Kolonovits also emphasizes the emotional impact of this music, for which he drew inspiration from Verdi and Wagner (VIDEO 2), and these melodies that come directly to the heart.
Of all the cast members, the only one who has already had the honor to share the stage with Josep Carreras is Sabina Puértolas. Many of you already know this, and many will remember the concerts she took part to, and someone else can claim the privilege of attending one of them or more. In 2010 she accompanied Josep Carreras in his comeback to Teatro Alla Scala, on 10 October, with a really nice program, and two months later they offered a wonderful Christmas concert at the Palau de la Musica Catalana in Barcelona. At the time, I already admired her a lot: she is brilliant, charismatic, beautiful on stage, and with considerable interpretive skills, as well as having a great voice. I have watched over again a thousand times the videos of their concert in Pécs in 2007, two duets of zarzuela: both in No hay que quitar los hilvanes, from El barberillo de lavapiés, and in the famous Dúo y Jota of La Africana, you realize the complicity existsting between them, and how big artists can have fun too.
Again from the voice of Sabina, at ease as usual, you can listen to a short extract from a duet of El Juez, together with tenor José Luis Sola who plays the role of Alberto, the songwriter who is trying to locate his missing brother, who turns out to be the judge. The title is "Su canción Sr. García nos conmueve".
Although it is a short fragment, immediately reveals the melodic nature of this work by Kolonovits: music is immediate, it easily comes to the public.

PLOT
We known the main topic of the opera: set during the Franco dictatorship in Spain, is the kidnapping and re-education, by the Catholic Church, of  the children of dissidents. A story based on secrets, and on the impact they have on the characters themselves, with a tragic ending, but open to hope and forgiveness.
Now further details of the plot are available: the Teatro Arriaga has published a summary of the four acts, I report below. Sabina Puértolas as well gives us some details in this video.

ACT ONE
Songwriter Alberto García, through the song titled "El pañuelo de seda" ( The silk handkerchief ), is trying to attract the media's attention to the fate of his missing brother. In front of the death bed of his mother, for the first time he learned about the existence of his brother. Paula, a journalist joins with enthusiasm his cause. Judge Federico Rivas is chosen to decide on the opening of the ecclesiastical archives . He was an orphan himself, raised in a convent, and gradually begins to have doubts on the story that his parents were killed by the left wing. However, under pressure by the president of a far-right violent organization, Morales, he signs a declaration according to which the archives must remain closed.

ACT TWO
Meanwhile, some people gather in a bar to evoke memories. Alberto's song caused a wave of anger and rage. An old woman speaks of "urraca negra", the current abbess of the convent that has kidnapped the children, and of who was her favourite child, judge Federico Rivas. Therefore, no one should be surprised by the judge's decision against the opening of the archives. Alberto, in despair, decides to enter a convent on his own, to find the registration of his brother. Paula is afraid for him, but lets him go. Shortly after, the judge enters the bar to learn more about the missing children. When people recognize him, a riot breaks out. Paula protects the judge from the anger of  people, and asks him to speak with Alberto García, in order to find a compromise solution. Federico, who was fascinated by Paula's charisma, agrees.

THIRD ACT
Alberto was introduced in the convent with the help of a nun , who seeks the registration of García. As they hear footsteps, she hides Alberto in a side tunnel, when Morales enters the room and takes away from her hands of the registration of García. He orders the nun to call the abbess, then opens the registration proving that Federico Rivas is the brother Alberto is looking for. When the abbess arrives, Morales scolds her harshly, but she rejects. Federico completely ignores his past. Morales keeps the file, the abbess goes away. Shortly after, Morales' men discover Alberto, and drag him away. Morales takes the opportunity to compare the two brothers, and promises to Alberto to give him the registration in exchange for his retirement by the public  for a couple of days. Alberto accepts to wait at his parents home for the arrival of the dossier. Meanwhile, Morales orders his men to kidnap the judge's daughter.

Federico and Alberto are in their family home. The judge, recalling his own kidnapping while Alberto is telling to him, runs to talk to the abbess. Paula, who entered at that moment, asks Albert to help her to calm down the angry mob, but he refuses. Paula, disappointed, goes away.

ACT FOUR
In the convent, the abbess struggle with her past. Federico asks for an explanation. Finally, she gives him the silk scarf she has secretly kept all those years. Federico realizes that he is the missing brother. Furious, he accuses the abbess and asks her to open the archives. Meanwhile, they get the news that Alberto has kidnapped his daughter and is hiding her in his parents house. Federico rushes there.
In their family house, the two brothers meet their tragic end. Alberto, who denies having exchanged the judge's daughter for the registration, is shot by Morales. Before he dies, he recognizes Federico as his missing brother. The abbess publicly admits her guilt, and promises to open the archives. Federico joins Paula to find other people, and understand that only through forgiveness they can relieve the suffering of the past.
