Buona settimana a tutti!!

Key facts:

Welcome to a new Video of the Week.

After a week summer break, posting is back again with another historic moment which celebrates a quarter of a century: this time, number 25 is associated to the anniversary of Josep Carreras' reappearence at the International Music Festival Castell de Peralada with a magnificent recital on 13 August, 1988.
If the recital at the Arc del Triomf is considered as the long awaited rejoining of the tenor with his hometown and the barcelonese audience after a year forced absence due to a severe disease that abruptly interrupted his glorious career, this recital in Peralada should be regarded as the first truly international event.
During the first edition of the Festival in 1987, the tenor's performance was already announced for the following summer: Carlos Caballé, Montserrat's brother and manager of both, as well as the former artistic director of the Festival, had asked for Carreras' contribution for the following edition, and he accepted and was going to keep his promise if he had recovered and feel fine to do it. For this reason, in a joyful period for the world of opera after the beloved tenor's comeback to life and to his profession, Carreras kept his commitment with Peralada despite being predictably disputed among the most prestigious music festivals, such as Edimburgh and Salzburg that would have altered their schedule in order to deal with his performance. It was to be one of the last recitals with pianist Vincenzo Scalera.
After many thousands of people joining under the Arc de Triomf in Barcelona on July 21 and those ones of people attening the Grande Notte at the Arena di Verona he had presented on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Festival, culminating with his uncomparable version of Granada, the Peralada auditory filled up with three thousand people for what, besides being his first international performance, to be broadcasted worldwide by more than 40 TV channels, was to be the third benefit event to support his Foundation for the fight against leukemia. Among the guests of honour, Queen Sofia of Spain, Anna Maria and Irene of Greece, and Lady Diana, as well as the local authorities including the President of the Generalitat de Catalunya, Jordi Pujol.
An event of undisputed international reach as shown by such royal people attending, but a delegation from the fourth and fifth floor of boxes of the Gran Teatre del  Liceu could not miss, as it took place in Cataloni;: they showed a banner with the inscription WE (written in 7 languages) ♥ CARRERAS: a boundless devotion towards an extraordinary talent, not a divo, but an artist devoted to his profession and eternally grateful to the public  had always supported him.
For this occasion, Carreras had put together a quite heterogeneous repertoire, consisting of songs in Italian, Catalan, Spanish and French: among the composers he chose, we find Puccini, Massenet, Tosti, Lara, Mompou, Obradors, Turina, Hahn and Duparc. From the very first phrase of Malia, the opening song, the audience was already in the tenor's power, showing him the utmost confidence and devotion: Carreras, who had never taken advantage of his own experience for slush,  started singing creating such magic shich reached the highest levels immediately, culminating with Granada, the same song that had inflamed the Arena di Verona 5 days before.
I would like to recall this historic moment, one of the endless series dealing with Josep Carreras as the protagonist, with a song of rare beauty that our tenor chose to sing in the first part of his recital: L'Heure Exquise by Reynaldo Hahn.
Taken from the collection Chansons, L'Heure Exquise is a song that even moved to tears Verlaine, author of the lyrics, and that in turn inspired verses to another great French poet such as Mallarmé: the delicate and flowing melody, the refined modulations and the beauty of the lyrics masterfully combine with Carreras' artistic abilities, especially with his fine musicality and marked inclination for the mezza voce that dominates here the expression of the languid text.
All this recital (full video) is an Heure Exquise, and such refinement does not derive solely from the freshness of the timbre and his clear emission, qualities kept intact, neither only from his special phrasing nor from his sublime mezza voce: l'Heure Exquise is the result of a professional true to himself and to his vocation, of an artist who puts the technique in the service of an always sincere and touching interpretation, so intense to make us even forget technique. C'est l'heure exquise, c'est Josep Carreras. Enjoy it!

I hope you have appreciated my proposal of today. See you next Sunday with a new video. Have a nice week!!
