Josep Carreras enchanted again Solothurn almost 25 years since his first performance there

A distanza di quasi 25 anni dalla prima visita nel 1991, lo scorso 17 giugno, Josep Carreras si è esibito insieme al soprano Celine Byrne, al suo pianista Lorenzo Bavaj e all'Opera Petite Ensemble presso la Reithalle di Soletta, in Svizzera: questo recital benefico per la José Carreras Leukämie Stiftung ha fatto così parte del Solothurn Classics 2015, ed ha segnato la ripresa estiva del suo tour A Life in Music.

Giunto nella vigilia del concerto direttamente da Tokyo per le prove, Carreras ha portato sul palco un repertorio di suo assoluto gradimento, incentrato sulla Belle Epoque e sulle melodie mediterranee che rievocano le sue origini.
Ha dato avvio al concerto con Segreto e Sogno del prediletto Tosti, cui hanno fatto seguito la sua T'estimo e le pucciniane Terra e Mare e Sole e Amore, per un crescendo di emozioni importante già nella prima parte. 

Nella ripresa, subito una nota latina con Lejana tierra mía di Carlos Gardel e una squisita versione di Íntima di Tata Nacho, per spostarsi a poi a Napoli con la vincente coppia formata da Vurria e Passione, rispettivamente di Rendine e Valente, e Core 'ngrato, disarmante chiusura del programma ufficiale.

Ancora una volta, il soprano irlandese Celine Byrne si è dimostrata degna partner: ha saputo conquistare le grazie del pubblico spaziando tra Caro mio ben di Giordani e la Serenata di Toselli, nella prima parte, per insistere poi con Puccini e la deliziosa O mio babbino caro da Gianni Schicchi, e l'operetta con Vilja da La vedova allegra di Lehár.

Insieme, Carreras e Byrne si sono cimentati nella commovente solennità dell'Ave Maria di Schubert, e in Je te veux di Satie.

Anche il quartetto, l'Opera Petite Ensemble ha trovato due momenti di protagonismo assoluto con Valse Coquette di Leoncavallo e l'immancabile Intermezzo da Cavalleria Rusticana.

Inondata dai fiori, dagli applausi e dai bravo, la coppia di artisti ha necessariamente dovuto offrire qualche brano fuori programma in segno di gratitudine per il calore e la generosità manifestata dal pubblico: tra i bis spicca l'interpretazione del solo Carreras con Un'ombra (Warsaw Concerto) di Addinsell, senza dubbio uno dei pezzi forti del suo repertorio di recital, e i duetti nei brani Non ti scordar di me e Lippen Schweigen, quest'ultimo ancora da La vedova allegra.

Almost 25 years after his first visit in 1991, last Wednesday, June 17, Josep Carreras performed with soprano Celine Byrne, his pianist Lorenzo Bavaj and the Opera Petite Ensemble at the Reithalle in Solothurn, Switzerland: this charity recital was to support he José Carreras Leukämie Stiftung, and marked the resumption of his A Life in Music tour, as part of the Solothurn Classics 2015.

Carreras arrived on the eve of the concert directly from Tokyo for the rehearsals, and wanted to bring on stage a repertoire he particularly loves, mainly focused on Belle Epoque and the Mediterranean melodies that recall his roots. He started the concert with Segreto and Sogno of his most admired Tosti, which was followed by his T'estimo and Puccini's Terra e Mare and Sole e Amore, which meant  a real crescendo of emotions already in the first part.

In the second half, just a Latin note with Lejana tierra mía by Carlos Gardel and an exquisite version of Tata Nacho's Íntima, then to move to Naples with that unique couple of songs formed by Vurria and Passione, respectively by Rendine and Valente, and finally Core 'ngrato, the disarming closure of the official program.

Once again, the Irish soprano Celine Byrne proved a worthy partner: she entered in the public' good graces by ranging from Giordani's Caro mio ben to Toselli's Serenata, in the first part, then to insist with adorable Puccini's O mio babbino caro, from Gianni Schicchi, and the operetta with Vilja from Lehár's The Merry Widow.

Together, Carreras and Byrne took on the moving solemnity of Schubert's Ave Maria, and Je te veux by Satie.

Even the quartet, the Opera Petite Ensemble had two moments as absolute protagonist with Leoncavallo's Valse Coquette and the inevitable Intermezzo from Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana.

Showered with flowers, applause and bravo, the couple of artists necessarily had to offer some extra songs, expressing their gratitude for the warmth and generosity shown by the public: among the encores stands out Carreras' solo rendition of Un'ombra (Warsaw Concerto) by Addinsell, undoubtedly one of the highlights of his recital repertoire, and the duets Non ti scordar di me and Lippen Schweigen, the latter still from The Merry Widow.
