"Il Video della Settimana": Josep Carreras sings Because (A Tribute to Mario Lanza, 1994)

With a Song in My Heart.

Buona settimana a tutti!!

Key facts:

Welcome to a new Video of the Week.
◦ I would like to dedicate today's edition to special anniversary dating back to a few days ago: it is not directly related to our tenor, but to another one, who has played a crucial role in Josep Carreras' life. As soon as you read Mario Lanza, all will be clear. The great Mario Lanza was born on January 31, 1921, and last week celebrated the 92nd anniversary of his birth. This extraordinary American tenor of Italian origin has been a model for many of the greatest singers of latest generations: many of them have admired his extraordinary talent and irresistible charisma through his interpretation in the film, The Great Caruso, 1951, in which he embodied the legendary Neapolitan tenor Enrico Caruso, singing several songs of his repertoire. The success of this film was amazing, and the soundtrack was awarded with a gold record, apart from having sold over one million copies.
◦ Josep Carreras often recalls a Sunday afternoon when he went to the  Gayarre Cinema in Sants quarter of Barcelona with his parents to watch a colour film starring Mario Lanza tiitled The Great Caruso, being just 6. He was so bewitched by Lanza's charm, by his way of singing, smiling and moving that, as he was back home, started singing his way all the songs he had heard in the film, even enclosing himself into the bathroom for hours. Such behaviour became almost a torment for his family; however, they immediatly realised he had a remarkable musical instinct for music and especially for singing, and from that very moment they completely supported him and his musical studies. Such magnetic impact turned out to be fundamental, not only because it revealed the Josep's strong predisposition for singing, but mainly because it made him want to  become an opera singer one day.
◦ If he did it, maybe it's thanks to Mario Lanza, and this is especially Josep to be aware of and grateful: March 15, 1994, his gratitude and affection for the great American tenor gave life to a beautiful tribute at the Royal Albert Hall in London entitled With a Song in My Heart. In this affectionate tribute, Josep Carreras put together many of the songs made popular by Mario Lanza, one of the first opera singer who experienced also a more popular repertoire due to his versatility that made him stand out anyway. Lanza, as well as Giuseppe Di Stefano who was also born in 1921, Frank Sinatra in his field, among other artists, belong to the category of what in Italian is called dicitore, alas that kind of singer who can give the right meaning to words. Josep Carreras possesses the same virtue, and has become a wonderful exponent of this category too.
◦ Among so many songs Carreras has proposed on this occasion in which he explicitly paid tribute to Mario Lanza, as well as on many other ones, it is very difficult to pick one. Personally, when I think of Mario Lanza the first song that comes to my mind is Be my love, but I have already proposed it in the catalan version with Núria Feliu, some months ago. Obviously, 71 editions of "The Video of the Week" restrict a bit my choice, but it does not prevent me from choosing Because by Guy D'Hardelot. Be careful, it is not to be confused with Because you're mine, another extremely representative song based on the musical that Lanza has turned into a great success. Because is a love song composed in French, but most of us are more familiar with the English lyrics.
◦ Why this choice? Well, it is a song that I always liked, one of many in which Josep Carreras shows his talent as a dicitore, giving each word the right lapel with his sweet and seductive singing. I am always fascinated, by the way he is so much versatile without giving up lyric nature, by his choice to emphasize certain passages such as " and pray His love may make our love divine", stressing on the word make, in the final stanza. With such complete sincerity that has always characterized him, Carreras in this song overflows absolutely visceral feeling and passion worthy of a tribute to Mario Lanza. Enjoy!!
Hope you have appreciated my proposal of today. See you next Sundat for a new video. Wish you alla a nice week!!
