"Danke Berlin, danke Deutschland für die Hilfe": the 21. José Carreras Gala raised 3,2 million Euros for the fight against leukaemia

I miei fratelli erano sempre presenti e potevamo avere contatti attraverso guanti come questi.

DANKE DEUTSCHLAND!!
FELICITATS JOSEP!!

LONG LIVE
THE JOSE CARRERAS GALA

ENGLISH
Lots of expectation for the 21. José Carreras Gala, which was held for the first time in Berlin at the Estrel Convention Center and broadcast live by the channel Sat. 1 Gold. With regards to the moderation, like last year Josep Carreras was joined by Nina Eichinger and Matthias Killing, the latter by Sat.1 Gold, resposbible for the donations side. As we could imagine, the livestream of Sat. 1 Gold worked exclusively within the German-speaking countries. However, the other links provided worked satisfactorily in the rest of the world as well.
Once again, it was a very rich Gala, as far from both artistic and, above all, human side. In facts, we should not forget that patients are the real protagonists of this annual event: children, teenagers, parents struggling like warriors against such terrible disease, those who thanks God win the battle and get back to life and even take part to the show, with the healing shining on their faces, but also those who unfortunately do not survive... and there are still many.
The José Carreras Gala is all about this, emotions and humanity, it shows you the suffering in an authentic and always discreet way: it makes you feel joy when you realize that some can make it, but on the other hand, the age of some of those who could not survive makes it really impossible to accept the fact that they could not survive.
By the way, it is precisely for this reason that this Gala and the Foundation exist: therefore, the generosity of the German people is crucial, and even this year matched all the expectations. The first preliminary results, announced about one hour from the beginning, marked over 600,000 Euros, the final one, a few minutes to the end the show, marked almost 3.2 million. Why preliminary? Because donations are open until the end of the year.
Even on an artistic level, the twenty-first edition counted on the unconditional support of some veterans such as David Garrett, Herbert Grönemeyer and Peter Maffay, but also  Joris, Marit Larsen, Die Prinzen, Al Bano & Romina Power, Valentina Babor, Nicole Cross, Ehrlich Brothers, Namika, and VoXXclub.
Josep Carreras, host and presenter, proved to be really amazing, and this time I do not refer only to his artistic contribution. Last Thursday night he was the same as ever and, if possible, even more, looking like a professional moderator, brilliant and comfortable throughout the  four-hour program.
Already in the first part he performed the song Tristesse, taken from a famous studio by Chopin,
then he brought Christmas on stage when he sang with Herbert Grönemeyer  The little drummer boy yet Silent Night with David Garrett playing violin and, at the end, a final duet with Peter Maffay in the final track of Maffay's album Tabaluga, Nessaja.
As usual, he asked in German for German support by encouraging viewers to donate and help save lives, and he distinguished himself for his great humanity through his visits to many German patients, who like him have struggled or are still struggling against this disease. He showed his most sincere support to all of them.
"I made bone marrow transplant 28 years ago, imagine yourself, and here I am!", he told reassuring a young patient; "I experienced the sterile room. My brother and my sister were always out there and we could have contact through gloves like these ones. So, I hope you can understand what she feels", he humbly said  to a woman's daughter instead. Last but not least, when he was asked by Nina Eichinger, he recalled the terrible moment of diagnosis he received in Paris in July 1987.
We could also watch some video clips of the inauguration of José Carreras Tagesklinik, a center for children with cancer at the Erlangen Hospital in Germany, then a few moments of the celebration of the twentieth anniversary of the Deutsche José Carreras Leukämie Stiftung, which was also attended by Rebekka, a young former patient, and then the awarding of Honorary Membership of the Worldwide Network for Blood & Marrow Transplantation, that took place in Berlin a few days before the gala. Towards the very end, Jonas Kaufmann, German star tenor who is very close to Carreras, took part with a video message.
Finally, within the last preliminary result announced, this was what Josep Carreras said: "The generosity of our audience is the best Christmas present for me. Every single penny saves lives and relieves suffering. Thank you Berlin, thank you Germany for your help. And thanks to my many friends artists for such grand support." Since the very first edition in 1995 thanks to the donations raised more than 1,000 research projects have been supported in Germany. There is still a lot to do, this path is the only way possible in order to find a cure for leukemia. Leukämie muss heilbar werden. Immer und bei jedem.
