Josep Carreras on his Final World Tour: "It is not a deadline, it can be long, maybe two or three years"

A causa del posticipo del concerto di Vilnius, inizialmente previsto per lo scorso 14 febbraio e ora riprogrammato  per il 6 marzo, il concerto di stasera a Riga insieme a Celine Byrne segnerà la ripresa del tour mondiale finale di Josep Carreras, A Life in Music.

Ed è proprio questo l'argomento di apertura della conferenza stampa che ha avuto luogo ieri pomeriggio presso il Grand Palace Hotel, successivo solo al benvenuto alla stampa e all'esternazione della felicità per il suo ritorno in Lettonia dopo qualche anno.

Le ultime date annunciate da un po' di tempo riportano la dicitura Final World Tour e, proprio in apertura, Carreras illustra con estrema chiarezza che cosa questo significa concretamente nel suo caso, da un lato portando pubblicamente e personalmente i fatti all'attenzione di tutti, anche di coloro che ancora non ne erano consapevoli, dall'altro spegnendo eventuali allarmismi non necessari, perché non smetterà di cantare tanto presto. 

Al fine di evitare fraintendimenti, vi riporto qui la traduzione delle sue parole esatte.

Sì, questo è il tour mondiale finale, nel senso che ho sempre pensato che, prima di smettere completamente di cantare, mi sarebbe piaciuto andare in quei posti in cui ho cantato per oltre quarant'anni, quarantacinque per l'esattezza.  In questo senso lo chiamiamo tour finale, ma può durare a lungo, anche due, tre anni. Quindi non c'è una scadenza entro cui smetterò di cantare.

Il tenore ha successivamente messo in luce la grande difficoltà di essere un artista e un turista allo stesso tempo: quando viaggia per esibirsi, quindi per lavorare, ha veramente poco tempo per sé stesso. Cerca di conoscere il più possibile le località e i paesi che lo ospitano, ma non è facile. Nel momento in cui smetterà di cantare il suo programma è già definito molto chiaramente: si dedicherà alla fondazione per la lotta contro la leucemia di cui è presidente con tutte le sue forze ed il suo entusiasmo.

Per quanto concerne il programma del concerto, si augura che possa essere di gradimento e corrispondere alle aspettative di coloro che vi prenderanno parte: si tratta di un programma molto vario, basato prevalentemente su opera e canzoni spagnole e napoletane, come da diversi anni a questa parte. Ciò non significa che canti sempre le stesse canzoni, perché "si annoierebbe dopo un po'" - afferma scherzando.

Cambiando totalmente argomento e stato d'animo, afferma che è molto difficile trovare le parole adatte per coloro che soffrono a causa di una malattia severa come la leucemia: quello che ripete sempre è di "lottare con grande determinazione, ci fosse anche solo una possibilità su un milione", ma l'importante è mostrare loro affetto e supporto a livello di società.

Con Plácido Domingo la frequentazione si è mantenuta assidua: oltre ai concerti insieme a Luciano Pavarotti ne hanno fatti altri insieme a diversi soprano. Li lega un ottimo rapporto professionale e personale. L'unico punto di discordia è legato alla fede calcistica: uno del Real Madrid, l'altro del FC Barcelona.

Oltre ad apprezzare il prestigio dell'orchestra che lo accompagnerà domani, ha esaltato David Giménez, attualmente il direttore con cui preferisce esibirsi, del quale ammira il talento e la sensibilità. Date queste circostanze, il legame di parentela si riduce ad un particolare aneddotico. 

Sono tante le cose che lo rendono felice: trascorrere tempo con gli amici, con la famiglia in relazione alla quale fa un esplicito riferimento ai cinque nipoti e alla tenerezza dei momenti insieme a loro. Tuttavia non dimentica di citare altre opportunità che la vita offre, come la lettura, l'arte, lo sport. Al di là di questo, la musica è stata ed è ancora tutta la sua vita.

Molto interessante la domanda sullo sfondo storico-politico dell'opera El Juez, della quale eccezionalmente presenterà un'aria durante il concerto, in associazione al vissuto della sua famiglia, dalla quale ha imparato l'importanza dei valori quali democrazia, libertà e rispetto per gli altri. Puntualizza, inoltre,  che sarebbe lunga la conversazione sulla quarantennale dittatura di Franco in Spagna e le conseguenze che ne sono derivate. Secondo il suo modesto parere, ogni paese, anche i più piccoli come nel caso della Catalogna, hanno il diritto di scegliere chi vogliono essere senza imposizioni, nello specifico essere o meno indipendenti dalla Spagna: ciò dovrebbe verificarsi con un referendum attraverso il quale i cittadini, non i politici, avrebbero la possibilità di esprimere le proprie idee.

A suo giudizio, ci sarebbero tanti esempi tra i tenori attuali che, qualora volessero o avessero il coraggio di farlo, potrebbero ripetere un'esperienza analoga a quella che ha coinvolto i Tre Tenori: i primi tre nomi che cita, Jonas Kaufmann, Juan Diego Flórez e Roberto Alagna... "e forse Plácido Domingo" aggiunge con simpatia.

In conclusione, il luogo nel quale preferisce stare è la sua città natale, a costo di risultare sciovinista, Barcellona, per l'ottima qualità di vita e per tutto quello che ha da offrire a livello culturale, gastronomico e anche sportivo.

Due to the postponement of the Vilnius concert to March 6, originally scheduled for February 14, tonight's concert in Riga  together with Celine Byrne will mark the resumption date of Josep Carreras' Final World Tour, A Life in Music. And this is precisely the opening issue of the press conference, that took place on Thursday afternoon at the Grand Palace Hotel. Before that, Carreras just welcomed the press and expressed his happiness for being back to Latvia after a few years.

Lately, the new concert dates announced are reported through the label Final World Tour and,  at the very beginning of the conference, Carreras  explained very clearly what this means concretely in his case: on the one hand, he publicly and personally brought the facts to the attention of everyone, even those who were not yet aware of it, on the other this contributed to give up any unnecessary alarmism, since he's not stopping singing that soon.

In order to avoid misunderstandings, let me report here his exact words.

Yes, this is the final tour, in the sense that I have always thought that before I completely stop singing, I would love to go to the places where I have been singing for more than forty years, forty-five years exactly. And in this sense is what we call a "final" tour, but this final tour can be long, like two, three years. So, therefore it is not a deadline where I am going to finish singing.

After that, the tenor pointed out the great difficulty of being an artist and a tourist at the same time: every time he travels to perform, to work, he has very little time for himself. He just tries to learn as much as he can about locations the countries that host his concerts, but it is not easy. As soon as he will stop singing his plan is already defined very clearly: we will devote to his Foundation for the fight against leukemia with all his energy and enthusiasm.

As for the concert program, he hopes it will be enjoyed and meet the expectations of all the attending audience: it is a very varied program, mainly based on opera, Spanish and Neapolitan songs, such as it has been in the latest years. This does not mean that he always sings the same songs, because "he would get bored after a while", as he jokingly said. 
Soon after, both the subject and mood changed, since he said it is very difficult to find the right words to address to the patients of such a severe disease as leukaemia: his usual expression is "fight with great determination, no matter if there is even a possibility in a million", but the most important thing is to show them affection and support.

With Plácido Domingo, he said they still meet very often: besides the concerts with Luciano Pavarotti they sang along with several sopranos as well. They have an excellent professional and personal relationship. Their only divergence point is football: the one supports Real Madrid, the other FC Barcelona.

In addition his appreciation for the prestigious orchestra he is performing with tonight, he piaised David Giménez, which is currently the conductor he prefers to perform with, whose talent and sensitivity he deeply admires. Given these circumstances, the family bond is to be regarded just as anecdotic.

There are many things that make him happy: spending time with friends, with family, in relation to which he made explicit reference to his five grandchildren and the tenderness of the moments with them. However, he did not forget about some other opportunities that life offers, such as reading, art, sport. Besides, music has been and still is his life.

After that, a very interesting question about the historical and political background of Kolonovits' work El Juez, of which he will exclusively present an aria during the concert, in association to the life experience of his family, from whom he learned the importance of values ​​such as democracy, freedom and respect towards people. He said that it would take long to talk about the Franco's forty year Dictatorship and all what it meant to Spain. According to his humble opinion, every country, even the little ones like Catalonia, should have the right to choose who they want to be without coercion, specifically whether to be or not independent from Spain: that would be possible with a referendum through which not the politicians, but citizens would be able to express their ideas.

In his view, there would be many examples of tenors of today who, if they wanted or had the courage to do so, could repeat a similar experience to the one of the Three Tenors: the first three names that came to his mind are Jonas Kaufmann, Juan Diego Flórez and Roberto Alagna ... "and maybe Plácido Domingo" he added as a joke.

In conclusion, the place where like to be most is his hometown: no matter if he can seem chauvinistic, he chooses Barcelona ​​for the excellent quality of life and for all it offers as far from the cultural, gastronomic and even sport points of view.
