José Carreras Grand Prix - International Tenor Competition of the Elena Obraztsova Foundation (Ceremonial Opening, First and Second Round, Winners list)

Yesterday, 10 September 2018, marked the opening of the José Carreras Grand Prix, the International Tenor Competition of the Elena Obraztsova Foundation. 
It takes place in Moscow at the Musical Theatre «Helikon-Opera» under Dmitry Bertman, which is co-founder together with the Charitable Foundation of Support for the Music Art «The Elena Obraztsova Foundation.

The José Carreras Grand Prix, which will continue until Saturday, 15 September, deals with 80 participants, tenors aged 18-35, mainly Russian.

As previously announced, Josep Carreras is President of the Competition and Chairman of the Jury, which is actually composed of Lorenzo Bavaj (pianist and Professor of the Conservatorio Statale di Musica "G. Rossini" - Pesaro), Dmitry Bertman (Helikon Opera Artistic Director), bass Paata Burchuladze, Dmitry Korchak (tenor, chief guest conductor of The Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre), and soprano Marina Mescheriakova. On the contrary, both Jaume Aragall and Ileana Cotrubas are not part of the jury.

After the press conference, the Competition officially started with the Ceremonial Opening and a Gala - Concert, which was broadcast live on internet by the Elena Obraztsova's official Facebook page and YouTube Channel. During the ceremony, a greeting message by President Vladimir Putin was read:

 "The competition, led by one of the leading tenors of the planet, the magnificent Jose Carreras, is aimed at finding and supporting talented, promising young performers, developing international humanitarian contacts, and of course, it provides participants and guests with a unique opportunity to meet the real stars of vocal art, Elena Obraztsova of different years, to touch the great history and traditions of the Russian opera school" - the message reported.

As he was announced on stage, Josep Carreras said he is very happy and pleased for the opportunity to take part to such an event, the International Tenor Competition of the Foundation named after Elena Obraztsova, who was not only an amazing singer, but a lovely person and colleague for everyone.

After that he was honoured with the Legend of Opera Award, together with soprano Ileana Cotrubas, who sent a video message to thank for such a recognition in which she explained the reasons why she was not able to travel and be part of the event.

However, the Competition officially started today with the first round, in which 48 out of 80 participants have performed during three sessions: from 11am to 12:30 pm, from 1pm to 2:45pm and from 3:45pm to 5:30pm, local time. Each participant performed two arias by their own choice.

Again, the first round was broadcast live by the same sources, and the entire broadcast is available on Facebook and YouTube.


On Wednesday, the first round will continue with the other participants. The selected performer will take part to the second round which be held on Thursday, 13 September, and will be about two Neapolitan songs and Spanish Zarzuela.

UPDATE: the second part of the first round took place on 12 September. 



23 participants have been selected for the second round.

SECOND ROUND
  

From the 23 participants admitted to the second Round, 11 have been selected to take part to the third round, the finale, which will take place on Saturday, 15 September at the Stravinsky Hall at 5pm local time.
