"Il Video della Settimana": Josep Carreras introduces Giuseppe Di Stefano and sings Core 'ngrato at the Opera for Africa Gala in Verona 1985

Giuseppe Di Stefano and Josep Carreras

Buona settimana a tutti!!!

Key facts:

Welcome to a new Video of the Week.

◦ Today's edition will recall Giuseppe Di Stefano's death anniversary: in fact, the great tenor passed away on 3 March, five years ago, at his home in Santa Maria Hoè near Lecco, after a long illness following an assault suffered in Kenya in December 2004. Needless to describe what Giuseppe Di Stefano meant for Italy, for opera: his name, and especially his voice speaks for itself. Just in the previous edition of the Video of the Week, I was talking about him, especially about the role he particularly  had had in Josep Carreras' debut at La Scala in the role of Riccardo of Un Ballo in Maschera, and more in general he has been chosen as model par excellence by the Catalan tenor from early childhood.
◦ Last summer, on the anniversary of Di Stefano's Birthday, Josep Carreras received in Filetto, Villafranca in Lunigiana, a memorial award that the municipality wanted to institute due to the bond the italian tenor had with the lovely village, with that charming square in which he went to perform with Josep Carreras too, in 1985. 27 years later, the words that Josep Carreras used to remember his idol were extremely touching, full of inexhaustible, inevitable affection and devotion: just mind that he listens to Di Stefano's voice every single day.
◦ Also in 1985, on 18 August, not in Filetto but at the Arena in Verona, Josep Carreras, along with many colleagues such as Montserrat Caballé, Agnes Baltsa, Sherrill Milnes and its Giuseppe Di Stefano himself, gave birth to a charity gala titled Opera for Africa. Carreras had the great honour to open the show, not with the first song, but presenting the gala and announcing the first performance assigned to that tenor he has always considered as both number one and the one. Since I'm italian, I can't but admire Josep's beautiful Italian: since his first arrival in Italy, his ude of italian language has always been correct and easy, made even more special  by a just percievable foreign accent, very catalan. Actually, his good diction stood out not only in singing but in the spoken language too.
◦The emotion is even more tangible as he announced the beginning of the gala, very special to him as he was to bring back on that stage his idol, the idol of each one attending, one of the most beloved singers of all time. As Giuseppe Di Stefano arrived on stage, affectionately greeed his young and devoted disciple, heir of his clear diction, passionate phrasing, captivating interpretation and exquisite nuances, of a instinctively generous and communicative kind of singing. Seeing them together, even if for a few moments, is so exciting.
◦ The song Pippo was to sing was the Neapolitan I te vurria vasà, and his rendtition was made wonderful by features we can similarly find in Josep Carreras' younger performance, as he proposed the Neapolitan repertoire too, with a song that, over the years, has become one of his strong point: as we all know, Core 'ngrato can't miss in his concerts and recitals, and actually marks extremely intense moments.
◦ If I remember correctly, he dedicated same song to Giuseppe Di Stefano during the recital he offered in New York on 30 November, 1980, as the tenor from Catania was sitting among the audience.
For this reason, I would like to remember our beloved Pippo, on the day of the fifth anniversary of his death, with Josep's affectionate announcement and this subsequent rendition of this great Neapolitan song, as not only it was dedicated to him on certain occasions, but for sure Di Stefano's version of it was supposed to be his model. Josep, here as always, offers a version of great intensity, sustained by an extremely elegant phrasing, refined nuances, and by a voice in excellent condition, dedicated but exquisitely youthful as well. Enjoy it!

Hope you have appreciated my proposal of today. See you next Sunday with a new video, Whis you all a nice week!!
