Josep Carreras specially leads the 33rd edition of the traditional Christmas Concert at the Basilica di San Francesco in Assisi

Last 15 December, Josep Carreras recorded the traditional Christmas concert hosted at the Basilica di San Francesco in Assisi, Italy, which has been broadcast in Eurovision on Christmas Day by Rai1, right after Pope Francis' Urbi et Orbi blessing.

As a leading artist of the 33rd edition of such traditional, Carreras has been accompanied by the RAI National Symphony Orchestra conducted by David Giménez, the Piccoli Musici Choir and the Coenobium Choir (adult male voices).

The concert could be attended only upon invitation. If you missed it, you can watch it here below.

The program opened with an outstanding framing of the open space outside the Basilica accompanied by Carreras' remarkable rendition of Stille Nacht, which most probably was the last song of the program.

The legendary Catalan tenor proposed to the audience pieces from both the sacred repertoire and the most popular Christmas carols, which sounded even more evocative due to his incredible mastery and phrasing elegance, and the amazing frescos of the Superior Basilica.

More specifically, he sang Adeste Fideles, Schubert's Mille Cherubini in Coro, Spanish traditional La virgen lava pañales, and closed the concert with brilliant versions of I'll be home for Christmas and White Christmas.

The Piccoli Musici and Cenobium Choirs delighted the audience with Mozart's Ave Verum, a lovely Christmas Medley including popular carols like Jingle Bells, Santa Claus is coming to town, Happy Christmas (War is over), and It's Christmas time this year, followed by Winter Wonderland.

The Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI from Turin conducted by David Giménez played the Intermezzo from Bizet's Arlésienne Suite and Mozart's Divertimento in D major in three movements.

Carreras was warmly ovationed and, according to enthusiastic comments on Social Media, extremely appreciated by all the audience who followed the broadcasting on TV, as he created the Christmas spirit as only he can do.

Please notice that this wasn't the only Carreras' concert broadcast on TV on Christmas Day: our beloved tenor has been chosen by the Spanish Television (RTVE) as well, which broadcast the concert he offered at the Basilica de Santa Maria del Mar in Barcelona on 22nd December. The following post will be focused on it and soon published.

Our deepest gratitude to Josep Carreras for making our Christmas Day so special.
