Josep Carreras impressed the Guanzhou Opera House deeply

L'unico fra i Tre Tenori ad esibirsi presso l'Opera di Guanzhou, Josep Carreras con i capelli non più scuri ed il suo aspetto di uomo che ha ormai raggiunto una certa esperienza di vita, ha saputo coinvolgere profondamente il suo pubblico, seppur evitando note troppo acute e senza includere brani operistici ne programma del suo concerto durante il quale le sue esibizioni si sono a tratti alternati a brani eseguiti dalla sola orchestra diretta dal Maestro David Giménez. Tra gli encores "A Faraway Place", un motivo in più che ha portato il pubblico a dare mostra del proprio entusiasmo.

La prima grande ovazione Carreras l'ha ricevuta in contemporanea con il suo primissimo ingresso, ma da lì a poco con la sua voce vellutata, abilissima nel bilanciare tra potenza e i pianissimo, sarebbe riuscito a emozionare di commozione qualcuno tra il pubblico. 

Il tenore, che ha mostrato la sua gratitudine con il canto, ha scelto di proporre brani italiani e spagnoli, come Lu Cardillo, L'Ultima Canzone, Lejana Tierra Mía, T'Estimo, Rosó (Pel teu amor), Pecché, Core 'ngrato, e Silenzio Cantatore: sfortunatamente i brani non erano sottotitolati, ma la sincerità delle sue interpretazioni hanno saputo sfondare le barriere linguistiche: non cantava, ma viveva sulla propria pelle la storia di ogni canzone, si faceva carico dei sentimenti di ogni brano, con parole e gesti, fino ad arrivare ad essere sovrano assoluto del palcoscenico, senza nulla togliere all'Orchestra e al direttore.

Nemmeno cinque encores, tra cui il brano folk cinese, "Torna a Surriento" e "Granada", a gran sorpresa, sono riusciti a placare un pubblico che per tutto il concerto non ha trattenuto la minima emozione. Grande scalpore ha provocato proprio "A Faraway Place", della quale Carreras ha saputo rendere con delicatezza il significato emotivo, sforzandosi di pronunciarne il testo correttamente, mostrandosi molto rispettoso della musica locale e aperto a conoscerla. Tuttavia l'applauso del pubblico ha a tratti soffocato l'esecuzione, nota dolente che alcuni hanno criticato.

E così, anche l'ultimo di questi due concerti cinese, "solo concert", si è rivelato un autentico successo, dimostrando ancora una volta che Josep Carreras, anche con le sue caratteristiche vocali attuali, sa affermarsi maestro nell'interpretare la musica con arte, passione e sincerità.

In occasione di questo concerto a Guanzhou, Carreras racconta in un'intervista quali sono le emozioni che prova ancora oggi, e soprattutto oggi, nel salire sul palcoscenico; spiega cosa è imprescindibile per un cantante... non solo talento, ma soprattutto disciplina e impegno costante, accenna all'attività svolta dalla Fondazione contro la Leucemia che porta il suo nome, in particolare per i progetti relativi alla ricerca, e dichiara di gradire molto il riso e gli gnocchi. ◦ The only one of the Three Tenors who has performed at the Guanzhou Opera House, Josep Carreras, now silverhaired and mature, Josep Carreras has emotionally involved the audence, even avoiding top notes and not including operatic songs in his program. During the concerts, the Orchestra, conducted by David Giménez, performed alone several times.

◦ Carreras received the first big ovation as soon as he arrived on stage, and in a few moments he would move someone to tears with his velvet voice, balancing between energy and tenderness of his pianissimo. He showed his gratitude not with words but with his wonderful singing dealing with italian, spanish and catalan songs, such as Lu Cardillo, L'Ultima Canzone, Lejana Tierra Mía, T'Estimo, Rosó (Pel teu amor), Pecché, Core 'ngrato, e Silenzio Cantatore. Unfortunately there were no subtitles, but the catalan tenor could break linguistic barriers with his sincere interpretation: he was not only singing, but he was giving life to the story of each song, he expressed each feeling in it through notes and gestures. This way, he was the absolute protagonist on stage.

◦ Five encores: among them "A Faraway Place", "Torna a Surriento", and Granada... a great surprise. The audence reacted with endless enthusiasm as they heard the beginning of the chinese folk song: Carreras offered a very delicate rendition, doing his best in pronunciating the lyrics correctly, and expressing the right emotive meaning of the piece. He was said to show a great respect for foreign music. The audience'ovations sometimes covered the music, and someone has critizised their attitude. So, the last of these two concerts in China has turned into a hige success too, one proof more that Carreras, even with his current vocal features, can reveal himself as a master of sincere interpretation.
◦ In an interview recorded before the Guanzhou concert, he has expressed what he feels when he goes on stage, what this means for him especially now that the end is closer; he has also explained what is requested for a singer a part from talent... for example, discipline and costant efforts; he has talked a little bit about the activity of his leukemia foundation, more specifically on research projects, and has  affirmed that he likes rice and dumplings very much.
