Josep Carreras, premiato dalla Città di Villafranca in Lunigiana, rende onore alla memoria di Giuseppe Di Stefano nella Piazza del Pozzo di Filetto

Martedì sera presso la Piazza del Pozzo di Filetto, frazione del comune di Villafranca in Lunigiana (MS), in Toscana, si è svolta la Prima Edizione dell'evento che ha previsto anche la premiazione di Josep Carreras con la Cittadinanza Onoraria della Città di Villafranca, oltre all'assegnazione del primo premio alla lirica intitolato a Giuseppe Di Stefano. Alla sua memoria si dedicava il recital che ha contato con l'esibizione dei due giovani artisti, il soprano Gladys Rossi e il tenore Matthias Stier, accompagnati dal grande pianista italiano Lorenzo Bavaj, oltre a quella del grande tenore catalano in fase conclusiva. Presenti in prima fila anche la vedova di Di Stefano, Monica Curth, la figlia e la nuora.

Torna a Surriento

Già nel pomeriggio era tutto un fervere di preparativi, e si respirava un'atmosfera speciale, emozionata e rilassata allo stesso tempo, nella stessa piazza che Giuseppe Di Stefano portava nel cuore, nella quale portò a cantare anche Josep Carreras nel lontano 1985.

Sul far della sera si sono tenute le prove, giusto un accenno, prima di dare inizio definitivo alla serata, avvenuto per altro con una ventina di minuti di ritardo. La professionalità che regnava è stata smorzata la una punta di sano humor nel momento in cui il tenore si è cimentato in un'improvvisazione al pianoforte:  le faremo sapere" ha replicato ironicamente Lorenzo Bavaj , frase tipica di una commissione esaminatrice e Carreras, nei panni di un giovane esaminato, ha portato a conclusione la gag dicendo "Chiamate voi?".

Poco prima delle 9:30 la serata è stata inaugurata con la proiezione di un video che riassumeva uno spettacolo dedicato a Di Stefano presentato da Daniele Rubboli, che ebbe luogo l'anno scorso in un teatro di Milano. Questo illustrava l'esperienza biografica del tenore siciliano, dalla nascita al trasferimento a Milano, fino ai grandi debutti. La narrazione, avvenuta in prima persona, è stata scandita da qualche vecchio frammento audio che ha fatto rivivere la voce del grande Pippo. Rubboli ha successivamente introdotto la seconda parte dell'evento, costituita dal recital lirico che ha avuto come protagonisti i due giovani artisti, Matthias Stier e Gladys Rossi, esibitisi con tre brani ciascuno più un duetto. Il pubblico riunitosi nella Piazza del Pozzo ha generosamente premiato il talento dei due giovani, i quali possono vantare una carriera già affermata. Gladys Rossi, in particolare, con la sua tecnica impeccabile e le sue movenze ammalianti, ha saputo trascinare il pubblico, ma con questo non intendo mettere in ombra Matthias Stier, dotato di una voce molto limpida e cristallina, di quelle che piacciono a me, straordinario nell'interpretazione del Caro Elisir con il soprano.

Quelle tre o quattro nuvole minacciose che oscuravano il cielo della lunigiana hanno lasciato spazio alle stelle quando a salire sul palco è stato Josep Carreras, invitato a ritirare i due premi. Il Sindaco di Villafranca ha conferito al tenore la Cittadinanza Onoraria, e successivamente l'orafo ideatore del Premio alla Lirica "Giuseppe Di Stefano" si è incaricato dell'assegnazione.
Senz'altro uno dei momenti più densi di emozione della serata, quando Carreras, ritirato il premio, ha intavolato un breve discorso, prescindendo dalla sua professione di cantante lirico, sul fatto che tutti lottano "per essere il primo", quando secondo lui l'importante non è essere i primi, bensí gli unici; "E Giuseppe Di Stefano era l'unico, ma anche il numero uno" - queste sono state le sue parole conclusive, una frase di grande effetto ma che trasudava autentica sincerità, l'ammirazione e l'affetto che da tempo immemore lo lega al suo idolo, possessore di quella voce che lo accompagna ogni giorno, e nella quale tenta di rispecchiarsi. Ricorderete senz'altro quando Carreras disse che il suo obiettivo di cantante era quello di trasmettere le stesse emozioni che lui sentiva nell'ascoltare Di Stefano: è assai raro sentire un'icona della lirica come Josep Carreras, divenuto idolo di tanti tra cantanti d'opera e non, parlare del suo idolo con tanta umiltà e quella modestia che gli fanno un gran onore. È bello che gli idoli abbiano i propri idoli!!

Dopo aver ringraziato, onoratissimo per i riconoscimenti ricevuti, il tenore si è rivolto al pubblico per la parte conclusiva della serata, quella in cui la bellissima piazza di Filetto ha potuto godere di ben quattro brani tratti dal suo repertorio: innanzitutto ha speso parole di grande affetto per Lorenzo Bavaj, eccellente pianista marchigiano, con il quale intrattiene una relazione professionale ed una grande amicizia da 23 anni; ha in seguito presentato il primo dei brani che avrebbe eseguito, Lejana Tierra Mía, in lingua spagnola, seguito poi da un trio di brani napoletani quali Passione, Anema e Core e Dicitencello Vuje, dando vita a una intensità crescente culminata in un'autentica esplosione di applausi, bravo e standing ovations. Era una bella sensazione trovarsi in mezzo a un pubblico così affettuoso, caduto ai piedi del grande tenore catalano, il quale ha addirittura concesso un bis, esibendosi con i due giovani colleghi in una versione a tre di Torna a Surriento. Questa doveva essere la conclusione, ma davanti a tanto splendore paradossalmente è difficile accontentarsi: una grande folla si è riunita sotto al palco per chiedere l'autografo a Carreras il quale, armatosi di una gran pazienza si è mostrato disponibile accontentando tutti, ma proprio tutti. Al di là della tensione per l'esibizione, seppur breve, e all'inconveniente di dover firmare in piedi centinaia di autografi, Josep appariva molto sereno, rilassato e lusingato da tanto affetto dimostratogli: un'occasione ideale per godere anche a concerto terminato della sua compagnia, quella di un grande uomo che sa cantare ed incantare... anche una volta sceso dal palcoscenico.

◦ Last Tuesday, at Piazza del Pozzo in Filetto, a small village next to Villafranca in Lunigiana (MS), in Tuscany, the first edition of the Giuseppe Di Stefano memorial concert, during which Josep Carreras received the honorary citizenship and the "Giuseppe Di Stefano" Lyric Award, took place. In the first part, soprano Gladys Rossi and tenor Matthias Stier also performed with the great italian pianist Lorenzo Bavaj, and then Carreras, after being awarded, offered some songs from his usual repertoire. In addition, Di Stefano's second wife, german soprano Monica Curth, his daughter and daughter in law attended the ceremony. ◦ In the afternoon the village was preparing the stage, and you could perceive a special atmosphere, emotional and relaxed at the same time, in the same square Giuseppe Di Stefano loved so much, where he also shared the stage with Josep Carreras in 1985. The rehearsal took place in the evening, and the professionality reigning on stage has been made milder by sense of humour, in the very moment in which Josep Carreras started playing the piano. When he finished, Lorenzo Bavaj pronounced ironically the typical sentence you normally hear from a jury "le faremo sapere" (we'll let you know), and Carreras with the same humour answered back "chiamate voi?" (will you call me back?). So funny! 

◦ The ceremony started with a 20 minute-delay, at 9:20pm, with a video broadcasting of some fragments of a show dedicated to Giuseppe Di Stefano Daniele Robboli held in a theatre in Milan, last year. He told about the life of Di Stefano, from his childhood, to his great debuts. The first person narration alternated with some old recordings that allowed us to enjoy again Di Stefano's wonderful voice. Later, Rubboli introduced the two young artists, Gladys Rossi and Matthias Stier who perform with three songs each, and a great duet. The audience praised their talent generously: particularly the soprano seemed to capture the audience with her great technique and the way she moved on stage, but also the tenor, Matthias Stier has been great, especially in the "Caro Elisir" duet. I liked his crystal clear voice. 

◦ Those few bad clouds obscuring the sky above Filetto disappeared to welcome the stars when Josep Carreras arrived on stage for the awarding. He received from the Major of Villafranca the honorary citizenship, and the Giuseppe Di Stefano award from the jewlry designer who made it. Without doubts, it has been one of the most touching moments when Carreras, afer receiving it all, started a brief speech. Regardless of his profession, he claimed that everyone wants to be the first one, and fight for it, but according to him the most important thing is not to be the first, but to be the only one: "...and Giuseppe Di Stefano was the only... but also the number one" - these were the words he finished with. It's actually an effective sentence, but he was so sincere expressing his affection and admiration towards his idol, owner of that voice that accompaigns him every day, which he tries to mirror in. We all remember when he said that his aim as an artist was to communicate the audience the same emotion he felt by listening to Di Stefano: nowadays it's so unusual to hear one of the best opera singer ever like Josep Carreras, idol of so many people, opera singers or not, talking about his idol with so much humility and modesty, and this is an honour to him. Idols have their own idols, and that's great!! 

◦ After expressing his gratitude, so honoured for receiving such awards, the tenor addressed to the audience for the last part of the ceremony, during which the wonderful square in Filetto could enjoy four songs sung by him: first of all he showed great affection towards Lorenzo Bavaj, excellent pianist he has been having a wonderful relationship, both professional and personal, for 23 years. Then he introduced his first song, Lejana Tierra Mía, in spanish, followed by three neapolitan songs, Passione, Anema e Core and Dicitencello Vuje: this gave life to an increasing climax which burnt out with so many bravos and standing ovations. It was so great being part of such sensitive audience, completely abandoned and surrendered to the legendary catalan tenor who offered one encore sharing the stage with his young collegues: they sang together Torna a Surriento. That was meant to be the end, but it happens that you can't just get enough of it, so a big crowd gathered just down the stage: Carreras, patiently and generously, signed for everyone. Besides the tension for the performance, even though it was a shorter one, and the fact of a long standing-signing, Josep appeared to be in a very good mood, relaxed and flattered for such love the audience had for him. It has been a wonderful occasion to share some good moments with him, a man who can sing and enchant (in italian "cantare ed incantare)... also when he leaves the stage.
