"Il Video della Settimana": Josep Carreras and Ileana Cotrubas sing the duet of the first act of L'Elisir d'amore

Buona settimana a tutti!!

Key facts:

◦ Welcome to a new Video of the Week. This week has dealt with two important events such as the Josep Trueta Medal 2012 with which Josep Carreras has been awarded by the Government of Catalonia, and the concert that took place yesterday evening at the Pavelhão Multiusos of Guimarães, European City of Culture 2012, about which I'm collecting material but still waiting more infos. The choice of today has been extremely hard: what I knew was that I wanted some Opera, as it had been missing for long: I'm aware that lately I have been proposing a lot of recital repertoire, that's why I wanted Opera to be back here with some golden moment. Though I have been looking for some coincidence, such as anniversaries, I have found none, and also I didn't want to offer the same videos. But when it's something special, I think that it has to be celebrated besides coincidences and anniversaries. According to me, this is one of these cases... hope it's the same for you. So, I stumbled in this operatic fragment I have always loved so much, also because it's so meaningful besides the context of the opera it belongs to. You must have already realised that today we are talking about Gaetano Donizetti and his L'Elisir d'amore: it's a performance dating back to 1982, it was at the Vienna State Opera, and deals with wonderful interpreters such as Josep Carreras as Nemorino and Ileana Cotrubas as Adina. This is the duet of the first act "Chiedi all'aura lusinghiera".
◦ The Elisir is commonly regarded as a lovely opera, very light (in the most positive sense), far away from the tragic and the dramatic typical of other great masterpieces. But Opera is not made only by great heroes and losers, but also by characters like our Nemorino, so naïve and pure like in general young lovers are. Anyway, this can't make you think that he's not a deep character: opera is full of lines of love, some of which are extremely famous, but the image which Nemorino associates love with is, according to me, one of the most effective, authentic and that best represent love: the young man, as exbected by the libretto written by Felice Romani, describe his feeligs towards Adina, spoiled girl against faithful and constant love, associating it with a river driven by a powerful stream from the head to the sea where it dies hopelessly. According to him, love is like this stream, "a power he can't explain" ("un poter che non sa dir), an effective comparison because we actually can't explain the reason that moves our feelings, but we are simply driven by their power. The lyrics of this duet have a parallel structure in whic this tender image by Nemorino contrasts with unfaithful nature of the flattering aura, the image evoked by Adina.
◦ Cotrubas' and Carreras' interpretation and stage presence perfectly embody the two character: particularly, tenderness and such "forever young" expression in the face of our tenor that, at that time was in his early 30, offer an adorable and tremendously convincing image of the young naive lover of the so-called melodramma giocoso by Donizetti: his Nemorino didn't need to drink any elixir to make us fall in love. He simply succeded in it for how he was, for what he said and how he said it. Enjoy!!!

I hope you have appreciated my proposal of today. See you next Sunday with a new video. Wish you alla nice week!!
