"Il Video della Settimana" & Advent Calendar (Christmas surprise): Josep Carreras and Herbert Grönemeyer sing "Mensch" (Ser humano) (José Carreras Gala 2003)

Benvenuti per un nuovo Video della Settimana.

Questa settimana, segnata tra l'altro dalla cerimonia di Düsseldorf durante la quale Josep Carreras è stato premiato con il German Sustainability Award, è caratterizzata anche da un countdown verso la diciottesima edizione del José Carreras Gala che, come già sapete, andrà in onda su ARD - Das Erste alle 20:15 di giovedì prossimo, 13 Dicembre, indiretta dalla Neue Messe di Lipsia. In questi giorni ho gustato momenti meravigliosi che si sono susseguiti in queste, per ora, 17 edizioni durante le quali il Gala di Josep Carreras si è affermato come esponente di maggior successo di questo format con finalità benefiche. Un must, un appuntamento imperdibile in Germania nei giorni immediatamente precedenti a Natale.

Per questo motivo, per dimostrare ancora una volta quanto questo programma sia valido anche artisticamente, oltre che umanamente, vorrei dedicare questa edizione del Video della Settimana all'attesa di questo José Carreras Gala 2012. 

Ho scelto uno dei momenti forse più emozionanti per una serie di motivi che forse non sono noti a tutti: si tratta di una performance tratta dall'edizione del 2003, un duetto tra Josep Carreras e Herbert Grönemeyer in quella che forse è la canzone più nota di quest'ultimo, Mensch.

Herbert Grönemeyer, Herbie, com'è noto tra i fans, è un musicista tedesco di grandissimo successo, popolare  anche in Austria e Svizzera.
Un artista "del popolo", ma allo stesso tempo intellettuale, autentico e unico nel suo genere, dotato di una voce magari non bellissima, ma che sa essere uno straordinario veicolo di comunicazione. Apparentemente Herbie e Josep non sembrano avere molto in comune, a parte il successo e l'ammirazione della gente. L'apparenza inganna. Queste due icone condividono la loro sicurezza, una sicurezza che trova nome e cognome in Ingo Mertens, bodyguard di entrambi da molti anni. Tuttavia, questa esibizione va ben oltre alla collaborazione di Grönemeyer per il Gala di Josep Carreras.

Vi sarà chiaro l'autentico valore di questo momento solo venendo a conoscenza del fatto che si è trattata di una delle prime riapparizioni pubbliche del musicista dopo lunga assenza per gravissimi motivi familiari che trovano drammatica origine nella morte del fratello e della moglie, l'uno per leucemia e l'altra per cancro, il 3 ed il 5 Novembre dello stesso anno. Emotivamente distrutto, Grönemeyer è stato lontano dalle scene per più di un anno: nel 2002 ha pubblicato il nuovo singolo, Mensch, tratto dall'omonimo album premiato con 10 dischi di platino e a lungo tempo al primo posto delle classifiche tedesche.
Un anno dopo ha voluto proporlo a Lipsia condividendo il palco con Josep Carreras. Risulta essere stato un'esibizione un po' improvvisata, ma assolutamente pregna di valore per il contesto, per il doloroso vissuto dell'autore di questo brano, per la presenza del proprio Josep, che sicuramente sarà stata estremamente significativa per Grönemeyer il quale, al termine dell'esecuzione, era profondamente commosso.

Quello che è stato per molti anni presentatore del Gala insieme a Carreras, Axel Bulthaupt, ha presentato questa performance con duplice titolo, "Ser humano" oder "Mensch", proprio perché le strofe venivano cantate da Herbie in Tedesco, mentre Josep Carreras contribuiva nel ritornello cantando in lingua spagnola, dando con la propria voce ulteriore spessore sia fisico sia emotivo ad un brano che parla dell'essere umano.
Carreras interviene con cautela, come si può ben riscontrare nel primissimo ritornello in cui canta con voce quasi sommessa, ma recupera vigore in seguito dando una profondità quasi orchestrale ad un bellissimo brano di musica leggera. Un risultato straordinario, al di là di tutte le aspettative. Godetevelo!!!

◦ This week, marked among other things by the ceremony in Düsseldorf, during which Josep Carreras was honored with the German Sustainability Award, also features a countdown to the eighteenth edition of the José Carreras Gala which, as you should already know, will be broadcast on ARD - Das Erste at 8:15pm next Thursday, December 13, from the Neue Messe  in Leipzig. These days I have watched again wonderful moments that have occurred in these, currently, 17 editions of Josep Carreras Gala, throughout which it has established as the most successful program of benefit format in Germany. It is a  must, something you can't miss the days immediately before Christmas.
For this reason, in order to prove once again that this program is also valid artistically, as well as humanly, I would like to dedicate this edition of the Video of the Week to our "waiting for" the José Carreras Gala 2012. I chose, perhaps, one of the most emotional duet for some reasons which might not be known to all: this is a performance from the edition of 2003, a duet between Josep Carreras and Herbert Grönemeyer in what is probably the most popular song of the latter, Mensch.

◦ Herbert Grönemeyer, Herbie, as is well known among fans, is a German successful musician, also popular in Austria and Switzerland. An artist "of the people", but at the same time intellectual, authentic and unique, with a voice probably not that "beautiful", but that can be a wonderful means of communication. Apparently Herbie and Josep do not seem to have much in common, apart from the success and admiration of the people. Actually, appearences are deceptive. These two icons share their security,  a safety that finds its name in Ingo Mertens, bodyguard of both for many years. However, this performance goes well beyond  Grönemeyer's contribution for the Josep Carreras Gala.

◦ The real importance of this moment will be clear as soon as you come to know this was one of the very  first public reappearances of the german musician after a long absence due to serious reasons related to his family,  that are the deaths of his brother and his wife, the former for leukemia and the latetr for cancer, on 3 and 5 November of the same year. Emotionally destroyed, Grönemeyer has been away from the scene for more than a year: in 2002 he released the new song, Mensch, whose album was awarded  with 10 platinum  discs, and has been number 1 song on the German charts for long time.

A year later, he wanted to propose it in Leipzig, sharing the stage with Josep Carreras. It seems that such duet was quite improvised, but absolutely meaningful for such context, the painful experience of the author of this song, for the presence of Josep which certainly was very importante for Grönemeyer who was deeply moved at the end.

Axel Bulthaupt, who was for many years the presenter of the Gala along with Josep, introduced this song with double title, "Ser humano" oder "Mensch,":  while Herbie sang mainly in German, Josep  contributed in chorus by singing in Spanish, giving with his own voice additional physical and emotional depth to a song about human being.

Carreras was careful at the beginning, as you can notice in the very first chorus he sings, where his voice  seems almost subdued, but then his power increased, giving an almost orchestral dimension to a beautiful piece of music. An extraordinary result, beyond all expectations. Enjoy it!
