Josep Carreras va inaugurar la primera edició del Festival Jardins Palau Reial Pedralbes amb els clàssics de Broadway
Ieri sera è stato inaugurato in grande stile il nuovo Festival Jardins Palau Reial Pedralbes con il concerto di Josep Carreras che per l'occasione ha scelto un repertorio d'eccezione portando in questo angolo suggestivo della capitale catalana i classici di Broadway. Carreras ha condiviso il palco con il soprano italiano Gladys Rossi, e con la GIOrquestra, l'Orchestra Sinfonica di Girona, diretta dal Maestro David Giménez.
Un grandissimo onore che a incaricarsi del concerto di apertura sia stato proprio tenore, simbolo di estremo prestigio locale ed internazionale, e quindi assolutamente irrinunciabile, trattandosi della notte inaugurale della primissima edizione di una tipologia di festival musicale estivo assai più diffusa nella Costa Brava o in altre località catalane come Peralada, e che effettivamente prima d'ora mancava nella città di Barcellona.

Ospite alla trasmissione 8aldia (video) di Josep Cuní, in onda su 8tv nella vigilia dell'inaugurazione, Martín Pérez, fondatore e promotore per 12 anni del Festival Jardins de Cap Roig presso Calella de Palafrugell, ha commentato quanto la nascita di questo festival sia stata ben accolta, tanto che ancora prima dell'effettivo inizio è stato già venduto l'85% dei biglietti. Si è soffermato inoltre sull'esigenza di una proposta artistica di portata internazionale mirata ad attrarre anche pubblico proveniente dall'estero, ed in particolare, sull'onore che comporta che sia qualcuno come Josep Carreras ad incaricarsi di avviarlo, proponendo un repertorio non abituale ma sicuramente indicato per un concerto estivo all'aperto in un angolo suggestivo come i giardini del Palau Reial di Pedralbes, una perla nascosta nella metropoli catalana. Una scelta singolare da parte di un uomo "serio ed esigente, che mira all'eccellenza e la raggiunge". Un inizio che rimarrà nella storia.
Martín Pérez ha insistito su quanto fosse indispensabile la magia del luogo per potervi ospitare un festival estivo: chi ieri ha assistito al concerto di Josep Carreras avrà senz'altro riscontrato la bellezza dei giardini e di come sia stato appositamente disposto il palcoscenico sullo sfondo aperto del Palau Reial meravigliosamente illuminato.
Poco dopo l'orario stabilito, le 10, il concerto ha avuto inizio con un doveroso discorso introduttivo di Pérez come promotore, e successivamente con il primo momento di protagonismo assoluto per la GIOrquestra diretta da David Giménez, con l'Ouverture del Candide di Leonard Bernstein.
L'ingresso del tenore è stato poi accolto da un doveroso applauso, anche se non caloroso come altri che hanno fatto seguito: come mostra il video di BTV, Josep Carreras emanava eleganza, e non parlo solo del lo smoking che indossava, ancora prima di intonare il tema più popolare del musical South Pacific, Some enchanted evening: un incipit molto coraggioso ed esigente, in quanto si tratta di un brano che implica una certa intensità difficile da creare a freddo, con quello splendido finale in pianissimo. Subito dopo,
Josep Carreras ha scelto All the things you are da Very warm from May, per poi cedere il passo a Gladys Rossi con l'interpretazione di Glitter and be gay, sempre dal Candide di Bernstein, che richiede una certa agilità ed una buona capacità recitativa che il soprano ha dimostrato. Il tenore ha fatto ritorno dal suo pubblico portando un altro classico come With a song in my heart in una versione molto ben riuscita, per poi scambiarsi ancora con il soprano che ha cantato Art is calling from me, da The Enchantress. Prima della conclusione della prima parte la GIOrquestra ha eseguito in solitario Jazz Suite. Waltz no.2, e subito dopo All I ask of you da The Phantom of the Opera, eseguita in duetto da Carreras e Rossi, a mio parere il momento più toccante di questa prima metà: un'interpretazione curata con estremo buon gusto, espressività e con passaggi squisiti dalla mezzavoce alla piena potenza come avviene sulla parola "anywhere": splendida!!

Come risulta dalla sequenza dei brani previsti dalla seconda parte, le due metà presentano una struttura abbastanza simmetrica: Carreras ha voluto ricominciare con un altro brano emblematico come Moon River da Breakfast at Tiffany's, splendida ed emotiva come sempre, seguita da un'altrettanto riuscita versione di Be my love da The Tost of New Orleans nella quale Carreras ha superato brillantemente ogni difficoltà data dalle note più acute emesse in potenza. Già si contavano i primi BRAVO, assolutamente meritati.
Spazio a Gladys Rossi con Summertime da Porgy and Bess, e ad un nuovo duetto con la celebre Tonight da West Side Story, un altro momento evocatore di tanti ricordi, condotta molto bene e conclusa meravigliosamente in pianissimo.
Terzo ed ultimo brano per la sola orchestra è stato An American in Paris in cui la GIOrquestra ha dato mostra di una grande versatilità trovandosi a proprio agio anche nel musical e nei grandi classici del cinema. Secondo duetto di questa seconda metà è stato con Night and day da The Gay Divorce, per poi concludere il programma ufficiale del concerto con un brano ciascuno: il soprano ha proposto una vivace versione di By Strauss da The Show is on, mentre Josep Carreras non ha voluto rinunciare ad un brano che propone abitualmente nei suoi concerti e che rientra perfettamente nel repertorio proposto in serata, ovvero The Impossible Dream da The Man of La Mancha, per garantire un finale prorompente che senza dubbio si è verificato.
Diversi sono stati i bravo in questo frangente in cui gli artisti sono stati omaggiati, come di consueto, con i fiori: l'ambiente era caldo ma è stato con i bis che si è raggiunto il livello massimo di intensità.

Gli encores concessi sono stati cinque: Carreras ha scelto Chitarra Romana, lontano dal repertorio di Broadway ma sicuramente un brano molto popolare e gradito a tutti come ha dimostrato la calorosa ovazione al termine dell'esecuzione. Al contrario, Gladys Rossi ha insistito sullo stesso genere con un'ottima interpretazione di I could have danced all night da My Fair Lady.
Josep Carreras ha giocato la carta di Core 'ngrato per sedurre senza alcun rimedio possibile: il pubblico, forse più abituato al repertorio della canzone napoletana, è letteralmente esploso in un'ovazione calorosissima, vinto dalla passione travolgente con cui Carreras ha interpretato quella che oltre ad essere una tra le più emblematiche canzoni partenopee è sicuramente una che non può mancare nei suoi concerti proprio per l'emozione incontenibile che riesce a trasmettere. Un gran finale con due duetti: ancora dall'Italia Non ti scordar di me e per ultimo Amigos para siempre (Friends for life), inno dei Giochi Olimpici di Barcellona '92, sicuramente scelto per rendere omaggio alla città di Barcellona ed emozionare il pubblico nel ricordo dell'epoca di quelle olimpiadi. La canzone è stata accolta con un applauso eloquente fin dalle prime note e seguita da un'ovazione molto emotiva che ha concluso questo primissimo concerto del Festival Jardins Palau Reial Pedralbes in maniera straordinaria.
Sicuramente un evento esclusivo in tutti i sensi, sia per la nascita del Festival, sia per l'inaugurazione con Josep Carreras, in un'epoca in cui le sue performance a Barcellona non sono purtroppo molto frequenti.

As invited guest at the 8aldia (video) program by Josep Cuní, broadcast on 8TV, Catalan television, on the eve of the opening concert, Martín Pérez, founder and promoter of the Festival Jardins de Cap Roig in Calella de Palafrugell during 12 years, commented how the birth of this festival bringing together international artists has been well received by the public, so much that even before the beginning 85% of tickets had already been sold. He underlined the need to a kind of proposal that brings together international artists so to attract people from foreign countries too, and in particular, on the honor that Josep Carreras was going to open it, by choosing a repertoire probably less usual, but definitely recommended for a summer open air concert in such a magic location as the gardens of Palau Reial in Pedralbes district, a hidden gem in the Catalan metropolis that is not so popular. A peculiar choice by a man who is"serious and demanding, that aims for excellence and achieves it". An opening that will be part of history.
Martín Pérez insisted on how the magic of the place was essential to be able to host a summer music festival: those who attended the concert of Josep Carreras must have experienced the magic of the gardens and of how the stage had been set up with an open background showing Palau Reial wonderfully lit up.
Shortly after the expected time, 10pm , the concert began with an introductory speech by promoter Martín Pérez, and later with the first moment as absolute protagonist for GIOrquestra conducted by David Giménez, with the Ouverture of Candide by Leonard Bernstein.
The entrance of the tenor was then welcomed by a proper applause, though not as warm as others that followed: as shown in the video of BTV, Josep Carreras exuded elegance, and I am not simply referring to the smoking suit, even before he started to sing the most popular theme of the musical South Pacific, Some Enchanted evening: it is actually a corageous kind of beginning, as it is a song requiring such intensity that is difficult to create cold, with such exquisite pianissimo at the end that he always sings wonderfully. Soon after, Josep Carreras chose All the things you are from Very warm from May, and then changed with Gladys Rossi who performed Glitter and be gay, always from Bernstein's Candide, which requires a certain agility and a good acting that the soprano has shown to have. The tenor was then back with another classic like With a song in my heart very well performed, and then left again the scene to the soprano who sang Art is calling from me, from The Enchantress. Before the end of the first part, the GIOrquestra performed another solo, Jazz Suite. Waltz no.2, and soon after All I ask of you from The Phantom of the Opera, performed as a duet by both Carreras and Rossi: as far as I could listen, in my opinion this was the most touching moment of the first half, an extremely good tasted interpretation, with exquisite expressiveness and delightful passages from the mezzavoce to full power voice, like in the word "anywhere": beautiful!
As we can notice from the tracklist of the second part, the two halves have a fairly symmetrical structure: Carreras wanted to start over with another emblematic song such as Moon River from Breakfast at Tiffany's, lovely and emotional as ever, followed by an equally good version of Be my love from The Tost of New Orleans in which Carreras overcame every difficulty given by the sequence of powerful high notes. Here there were the first BRAVOS, absolutely deserved.
Another solo moment for Gladys Rossi with Summertime from Porgy and Bess, and a new duet with the famous Tonight from West Side Story, another moment that evokes so many memories, greatly interpreted with a lovely pianissimo at the end. On the contrary, Gladys Rossi insisted on the same repertoire with an excellent interpretation of I could have danced all night from My Fair Lady.
Then, Josep Carreras played the trump card of Core 'ngrato to seduce without any possible remedy: the public, perhaps more used to the Neapolitan repertoire, literally exploded in a thunderous ovation, won by such overwhelming passion Carreras can convey each time he sings what is regarded as one of the most emblematic Neapolitan songs ever, an that cannot miss in his concert because of the powerful emotion he provides. A grand finale with two more duets: once again from Italy, Non ti scordar di me, and finally Amigos para siempre (Friends for life), the Hymn of the Olympic Games of Barcelona '92, for sure chosen honor to the city of Barcelona and to excite the public by evoking the memories of the Olympics. The song was interrupted by a meaningful applause right after the first notes, and another enthusiastic standing ovation followed at the end of this first concert of the Festival Jardins Palau Reial Pedralbes. An exclusive event for different reasons: the very first concert of the first edition of the new born Festival, and a prestigious opening with Josep Carreras, in a time where he does not perform so often in Barcelona.

CONGRATULATIONS JOSEP!!!
Ci erano grandi aspettative per l'apertura del Festival. Un pubblico desideroso di goder dei giardini e ddal concerto. All'inizio tutto era un po 'freddo, ma è stato più caldo dopo la seconda metà. Josep ha cambiato l'atteggiamento dal volto e il corpo quando ha iniziato a cantare in italiano. L'energia è emersa e il pubblico ha goduto di molto. Non mi è piaciuto l'ultima canzone, perché è musicalmente orribile, fuori contesto e superata. Meglio se avessi cantato alla fine una canzone catalana, per esempio, come un omaggio alla sua città.
